First, a brief introduction: we are ICastell, we were born in Milan, we lived in Milan, we have worked in Milan, we went to school in Milan, but we decided to move to Bali! The story begins in 1999 when Sarah and Paolo met with a series of unfortunate small events, a real twist of fate, and it was love at first sight!
We both worked for many years in the magic world of Advertisement.
Sarah has extensive experience in the fashion and luxury goods sectors, working first for Condé Nast, as Advertising Manager and responsible for editorial coordinating of Style.it site and for the magazine Vanity Fair and then to Sole24ore at the launch of the montly magazine published from The Financial Times: “How to Spend it “; Paolo, as a seller of advertising space, first for the Virgilio web portal and then in the adv Agency of the newspaper La Stampa, Publikompass. In these years we have refined many techniques: the perfect look for every occasion, the perfect smile for every occasion, the perfect excuse for every occasion, the perfect stress for every occasion … so the quintessence of perfection!
Jacob was born in 2001, now, poet teenager a little bit introverted. Bashful in front of the camera, sometimes he appears in some shots stolen or through his short writings and his poems.
Tom was born in 2006, little devil exhibitionist, always ready for a photo or a video, never misses an opportunity to show off. The night and the sun, the beauty of diversity.
Our passion? Travel!!!
We save then we spend every year, small fortunes to travel around the world.
From Africa to the Americas, from Europe to Asia through the Middle East, going streight untill the Australia and New Zealand: we never stop!
Always looking for new cultures, discovering new cities, admiring wonderful landscapes, or looking for some animals to be photographed!
And it is during our travels that grows the passion for photography by Paolo, so he attends a professional course at the Italian Institute of Photography (ITF) to perfect his technique.
Our children follow us practically everywhere, already at the age of three years they knew by heart all the practices of the check-in and how to move in an airport more than in an amusement park.
In 2014 comes the big decision: Milan is too clasp, we want to try to live abroad and we choose as our new home Bali, the “Island of the Gods”, to the other side of the globe. We leave for a brief exploration of the new destination, never visited before, and it fascinates us.
Back at the headquarter, we plan everything in detail with Excel files that is the envy of NASA, we do a business plan with all our finances … we can do it!
So we decide, in this order to: get married, fire us from our respective jobs and sell all our goods. And when we say everything, we mean litteraly everything: from the house to the car, from the motorbike to all our clothes, from the children toys to the granny’s dishes, from the TV to the sofa, from the drill to the lamps. The objects of a life put on sale at a “garage sale” which we call “Leaveandlive”, organized at home. It ‘a success!
Here come a lot of friends, word of mouth works wonderly, even the regional TV comes. At the end we have nothing! We are light and free!
Scarlett Granny decides to come with us. She knows very well that the retairement life is better in Bali than in Italy!
The die is cast! We will never go back …. The departure is scheduled on November 25, 2014.
The first year we traveled a bit in Indonesia to integrate us with the local culture and a bit in Australia and New Zealand with a “on the road” of three months. The children studied at home and, in June 2015, they passed the examinations as external candidates in Italy.
A real sabbatic year, looking for ourselves and the happiness of our family!
Now, we are stable in Bali, Paolo has become a professional photographer (as you can see on this website) and Sarah, besides taking care of this blog, organizing trips to the discovery of Indonesia and South East Asia in order to create a rich photo Portfolio for on-line or off-line sales.
With this target, we have also opened a Company specialized in Interior Design: Vivo Art Experience.
The children are attending an international school in English and they are learning Indonesian language and a bit of Mandarin (which can come in handy!); Scarlett Granny instead makes the grandmother in Bali and the tourist in Italy.
Everything is going, for the moment, as expected, but we have many more rabbits in the cylinder, because the great thing about this story is that, as you’ll see, for nature … we never stop …
This is a travel diary, a small window on our lives, a blog that wants to make you laugh and dream, unpretentious.
This is our adventure. We are ICastell.
