More we live in the island, more the island gives us back important lessons of life!
Today, in the street of our house, it was the day of the cleaning: three men armed with hand lawnmower were cutting and setting the roadside.
Lesson # 1. In Bali there is work for everyone!
After the test (in the physical sense of the term) to buy a mattress and other errands, we went to have lunch in the ILlido, a new restaurant in Warisan shop, on Kerobokan.
For those who have never been to Bali, it is one of the busiest and smog-filled arteries in the island.
Going in the scooter or by car, stuck between the horns, it’s hard to believe that just walking into a furniture shop (the Warisan, in fact) there is an oasis of peace like this. Excellent cuisine, beautiful location.
Lesson # 2. Bali is always full of surprises !!
And that’s where we were able to make one of the greatest embarassment of our lives !!
I take a picture of a composition in the center of the table: a strange flower swollen with orchids attract my attention.
A gentleman, behind me, exclaimed in English: “I’m glad that you are taking a picture of my flower composition!”
“Do you make this flower composition?” I ask “it’s is very beautiful.”
Paolo spoke “There are some friends of us who are looking for a floral composer for their restaurant! If you give me your contacts I can pass to them!”
The gentleman gets up, he is happy and comes at our table, looking for his business card and entertains us with the usual conversation made of pleasantries: where do you come from, how long, why, blahblah.
Business is always around the corner!
“I give my flower compositions to several famous and elegant restaurants here in Bali” and starts rattling off names here and there. “I am very cheap for the quality that I offer, as you call the restaurant of your friends?”
We, thinking to make a favor to our friends, we’ll say in unison the name of the restaurant.
He looks at us, the smile disappears from his lips.
“But I’m the supplier of “thenameoftherestaurantofourfriednsthatidontwanttorepeat”!!
“Oh yeah?!?!!. Good!!!!” We exchange glances, embarrassed.
“So, your friends are looking for another supplier for the flowers?”
“no, don’t worry!” I hasten to say, hoping that nobody could hear the sound of my fingernails scratching under the table, “they are just trying inspiration for new compositions, maybe to change the mood …”
He looks at me and say “But if I change the flowers every week?”.
I want to die!!
If one of the three volcanoes of Bali should ever erupt, this would be a perfect time !!
We stammer out something together, incoherently, trying to speed up the finish of the lunch and the payment of the bill.
We say goodbye with a quick “you know … just talking … italian people talk to much …”.
Lesson # 3. Remember that Bali is a small island where everyone knows !!
